Hi,

Red squirrels are native to Europe and in some places are very rare. I live in an area where they survive ok.

The Grey squirrel (or American tree rats as they are known here) were imported to England in the late 19th century by people who had too much money and thought they would look nice with the then popular red squirrel on their large estates.

The Tree rats are much bigger, than the reds, they eat all available food, starving the reds, they carry a deadly disease called squirrel pox, which does not harms the greys, but wipes out whole populations of the poor red squirrel.

Another fact is, where I live they are shot on site. They are then cooked and sold to the American tourist that flock to this area. How are red squirrels different from grey squirrels what facts can you find out about them?
Their colours are the easiest way of identifying them. Red squirrels are native to european countries however the grey squirrel came over to the UK from america and because of competition for food, shelter, mates and so the red squirrels don't ahve as many numbers as they used to because of the greys coming into an ecosystem that can't support both
