apparently the same thing or something similar is happening in the U.S..

the larger more aggressive red's(AKA fox squirrel) were dominant in my area 40 years ago but now you seldom see a red squirrel %26amp; the little grey tree rats are everywhere, %26amp; eating all my pecans %26amp; walnuts before they ripen. How is the red squirrel threatened by the grey. ?
I don't think red squirrels are threatened by grays. Red squirrels are more aggressive in defending their territory and have more and bigger litters each year. I have seen red squirrels drive their gray cousins from a nest but I've never seen it happen the other way.

Capt.Sardonic is refering to a different red squirrel than the reds we have in northern New England. Our red squirrels are 1/3 the size of the grays. I am not familiar with the fox squirrel so my answer does not apply to that species of red squirrel.
The red squirrel aquired laser beams on their foreheads from their close reletive, the aliens. They then use these laser beams to decimate local gray squirrel populations.
I think it's the other way around. The red squirrels chew cones off trees before they are ripe around here. Thus the grey squirrels don't have that food source to store (they like the cones ripe before eating them).
