Imported & flourishing grey squirrels, what to do ?

Hi,

I speak of the greys, that have now been classed as vermin.

I wish no harm to any Animal, but this has somewhat got out of control

Our native red %26amp; black squirrels are diminishing, through disease and lack of habitat.

I have huge and many holes in the lawn, so do parks and bowling greens etc.

I am told that we are now not only permitted, but advised to cull them back a bit.

Trouble is, my young nieces were around the other day, and two appeared, digging holes in the lawn.

I went for the air-rifle, as I am fed up with them, so they shouted ';go away, Uncle Bob will shoot you';

Because they are cute-looking

Cute or not, surely we have to take some action

Rabbits in Australia for example

Any notions ?

';The ultimate ethical meal: a grey squirrelI

It tastes sweet, like a cross between lamb and duck. And it's selling as fast as butchers can get it';Imported %26amp; flourishing grey squirrels, what to do ?
Grey squirrels also carry a disease fatal to our native red squirrel. In large numbers they are deadly to trees taking of bark and young buds before they can bloom and thus seed. They are classed as vermin or (tree rats) because that is what they are and most air rifle hunters will take time to take them out. Most forestry officers set traps to control their numbers.
My grandpa used to trap them and eat them.

I tasted it one time. It's not very good. Tastes like bad chicken.

But they are pretty harmless. They are everywhere in my city and they really don't do much damage. Even those holes they dig are small enough that they don't damage your lawn. But if you want to keep a bowling green in good condition, you're going to have to get a good fence.
A humane squirrel trap, check the trap making sure its not a red (doubtful) or a shrew vole or similar,if they are release them. rat mouse or grey squirrel you can snap their necks. These boys will be able to advise you better
