Why is the grey squirrel the state animal of north carolina?

why... why... WHYYYYYWhy is the grey squirrel the state animal of north carolina?
If any of the nuts fall too far from the tree, they have something to bring them back.

It is because there are Grey Tree Squirrels everywhere. Why is the grey squirrel the state animal of north carolina?
Only because they are nicer-looking than Norway rats.

Seriously, state animals, drinks, horses, insects, gems, birds, dogs, etc. usually are named because some grade school class talks about it and the teacher writes a letter to the local representative. The rep, seeing a chance to please the constituents (and their parents) without spending much money, introduces it as a bill. The bill passes and is signed for the same reason. And another useless law is on the books.
Well, do you live in North Carolina, if you do, then you'll notice that every where you go, you see a grey squirrel! If you see something grey then you pretty much assume that it's a grey squirrel.
because they are so tasty
because there are so many of them
there is a lot of them
